A Knox Box Rapid Entry System allows firefighters or emergency personnel to gain access to a secured structure with the permission of the owners and only during emergency situations. A master key will be mounted in the fire dept.'s apparatus and can only be released with a special set of DTMF tones that an Emergency dispatcher must put out over a radio frequency. By the dispatcher releasing the master key, the firefighters can open a securely mounted box on the exterior of a structure that holds important information about the building during emergencies. This prevents unnecessary damage to a building with force-able entry tools. Boxes mounted on the exterior of a structure are extremely secure but also can be wired into a building owners security alarm system allowing for added security.
The Shenango Volunteer Fire Dept will be installing a Knox Box® in our recently purchased fire engine in the near future. Anyone interested in how a Knox Box works or may be interested in installing the system in the future should contact the local fire dept. The system will be installed at the expense of the business/homeowner.
