If the answer is yes, you may be the right individual the Shenango Area Fire District has been looking for. There are very few opportunities in life that can match the sense of pride and camaraderie that comes with being a Volunteer Firefighter. Our members carry a great deal of brotherhood that gives each member the ultimate sense of comradeship. When working with our men and women, you will be called upon to utilize your skills, abilities and ethics to the maximum capacity. You must be an excellent team member because of the large amount of time spent with fellow employees. Our department provides all the tools necessary to be successful; including insurance, uniforms, gear and training. Because the task of firefighter is critical to the safety of our community, the standards are set high but the rewards that come with the job are greater. The assumed job description of firefighter involves hazardous/dangerous work that may not be suited for all individuals seeking membership. The job of firefighter involves extremely difficult physical work and the ability to apply previously acquired knowledge in adverse conditions. High mental, physical and behavioral standards are absolutely necessary to function proficiently when called to perform this job. Some job duties may include things such as fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical care and other related services. It is possible that these duties be performed at various times of day and during unfavorable conditions.
So what’s expected of a Volunteer Firefighter??
You will be expected, when available, to respond to emergency incidents in the township or mutual aid response in a safe and timely manner. All personnel shall display a great deal of professionalism as your job will directly impact the lives of others. At a moments notice you will need to be willing to put aside what you are doing and shift from being an everyday resident to a firefighter that is able to protect and serve the community. Because you will receive equal training than some career firefighters, you will be expected to perform at the highest of standards. All members must follow a military style command structure and be willing to take orders from superiors.
Can I talk with someone about the process of becoming a member?
Yes, we are always willing to talk with anyone interested and explain the process. Anyone interested can email or call. We are also available to talk in person on Wednesday evenings from 6-10pm at our East Washington Street station.
How much time is expected of me to give toward department functions?
We understand family and work activities come first for our members. As much time as you are willing to put forth will benefit you as a firefighter. Training is timely but it insures our firefighters are safe during incidents.
What if I can’t perform some tasks that are expected of a firefighter?
Each member is expected to know his/her own limitations. Our trained members and officers will not put an individual in a situation they can not handle. There are various tasks that need to be performed at any emergency incident that require people of all different skill levels.
I do not live near the fire station; will I still be able to attend emergency calls?
Yes, most residents living in the township live near one of our two stations. You may respond to either station depending on your geographical location.
How long does the initial training take before I am able to perform the tasks of firefighter?
Initial training is 216 hours and can be completed within a given amount of time. Our department understands the demands of today’s society and is willing to work with any member wanting to complete training.
Are there physical fitness requirements?
All members are required to complete a physical examination that is paid for by the department. Your physical well being is strongly recommended to meet the standards of the job description. Workout equipment is provided at both stations and is available for use at any time for our members. You are expected to know your own limitations.
