Volunteering with the fire district is one of the most rewarding ways to serve your community. Our members form strong friendships and take pride in working together to protect the people and places that make Shenango Township special. Being part of the fire district is not only meaningful—it can also be exciting, challenging, and a lot of fun.
As a volunteer firefighter, you’ll have the opportunity to learn new skills, respond to emergencies, participate in community events, and be part of a team that supports one another both on and off the fireground. What Is Expected of a Volunteer Firefighter?
When available, members are encouraged to respond to emergency incidents within the township or assist neighboring communities through mutual aid. Firefighters work as a team, supporting one another and following the direction of trained officers to ensure incidents are handled safely and effectively.
Volunteering also includes participating in training, meetings, and community activities. Many members find this time especially rewarding because it builds friendships, skills, and confidence.
Can I Speak With Someone About Joining?
Absolutely. We are always happy to talk with individuals interested in learning more about the department and the membership process.
Anyone interested can contact us by phone or email, or stop by to speak with members in person on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at our East Washington Street station.
How Much Time Is Expected?
We understand that family and work commitments come first. Members contribute as much time as they are able. The more time you spend training and responding to calls, the more experience you will gain and the more rewarding the experience becomes.
What If I Cannot Perform Certain Firefighting Tasks?
Every member should understand their own abilities and limitations. Fireground operations involve many different roles, and there are a variety of ways members can assist during emergencies and department activities. Our officers ensure that members are assigned tasks they can perform safely.
What If I Do Not Live Near the Fire Station?
The Shenango Area Fire District currently operates three fire stations, which helps ensure that most residents of the township are located near one of our facilities. Members may respond to whichever station is most convenient based on their location at the time of the call.
How Long Does Training Take?
Initial firefighter training is approximately 216 hours and can be completed over time in a way that works with your schedule. Our department understands the demands of modern life and works with members to help them complete training successfully.
Are There Fitness Requirements?
All members must complete a department-paid physical examination. Maintaining good physical health is encouraged due to the nature of the work.
While the department no longer maintains workout equipment in the stations, members who wish to work out may receive a gym membership provided by the department.
Junior Firefighter Program
The Shenango Area Fire District also offers a Junior Firefighter Program for young people interested in learning about the fire service. This program provides a great opportunity for youth to gain experience, develop leadership skills, and participate in department activities.
Junior members may also have opportunities to earn community service hours while learning about emergency services and public safety.
